Artist Statement

Ashley Prior

  • As a ceramic artist, I find my inspiration from connecting to nature. Most of the vessels I create are thrown on the wheel. I find beauty in working different forms and landscapes, it shows that each piece is an individual in nature.  These pieces are raku fired, of the most natural techniques that you can encounter in pottery. In this firing process all of nature's elements are used, earth, fire, air and water. When in reduction the carbon in the fire creates cracks and markings that are unique to each piece.

  • Raku doesn’t only make each pot unique but also creates a better relationship between you and your work. The hands-on process is where I find my passion. You must be involved and aware of each move you make. Recently I have been incorporating horsehair and feathers onto each pot. Pulling each pot from the kiln while still burning red perfectly placing these natural elements on the pot creates a black carbon effect.

  • I spend my days off in nature getting ideas of landscapes and textures I can use on my pots. Each pot is an individual trying to reconnect and find where they belong in this world. We live in a place where technology is taking over. I believe as humans, we need to revert back to nature, where it all started. These pieces are their own story on how they as an individual came back to nature.
